How To Apply For Subsequent Helb Loan
The Higher Education Loans Board has been a lifeline for students wishing to pursue higher education since its founding in 1995. These can be first-year students just starting their academic career or those looking for extra help for years of study ahead.
The number of loans for which you’re eligible depends on the duration of your program. For instance, a four-year program typically allows for four loan disbursements, while a five-year program may accommodate up to five disbursements.
If you fall into any of these categories, we are pleased to let you know that HELB offers two primary types of undergraduate loan applications:
First-Time Application: As mentioned earlier, this serves applicants venturing into higher education for the first time.
Subsequent Application: After the first application, you are eligible for more loans. The subsequent application is designed for you if you are applying for the second, third, or fourth time in alignment with the duration of your academic program.
HELB Loan Requirements
While you might think HELB is available to all undergraduates, you still need to meet certain criteria before the loan can be disbursed. So we advise that you familiarize yourself with the prerequisites for loan eligibility. We have made that easy for you.
Below is a comprehensive overview of the requirements for applying for HELB loans:

1. Be admitted in a recognized institution
The first and most evident need is that you have to be accepted into a Kenyan public or private institution that has been accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
In order to save yourself some worry, make sure your institution satisfies the accreditation requirements before submitting your application.
2. Undergraduate Program Enrollment
Subsequent Helb loans are for students pursuing their studies in Public or Chartered Private Universities within the East African Community, placed either through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), Self-sponsored, Parallel and Module II Students studying for a Bachelor’s Degree only.
HELB loans primarily cater to students pursuing undergraduate studies. Make sure you’re pursuing a bachelor’s degree to meet the eligibility criteria.
3. Previous Loan Beneficiary
Just like its name suggests, subsequent HELB loan applications are reserved for individuals who have previously benefited from HELB financing.
If you’re applying for a second, third, or fourth loan disbursement, you must have received HELB loans in previous academic years.
4. Valid Identification Documents
To make your application smooth and seamless, have all the necessary documents at hand. A lack of these documents can render your application invalid.
So prepare essential identification documents ahead of time. You will need a valid national ID card or passport, to verify your identity during the application process.
5. Academic Program Duration
Loan disbursements are normally limited to four under a four-year scheme, but can reach five under a five-year program. The length of your academic program determines how many loan disbursements you are eligible for.
Check the length of your program before applying, and schedule your loan applications appropriately.
