About Course

The computer essentials course is designed to equip learners with essential computer skills that are required in the job market. This course has been tailored to match the required industry standards that ensures the learners are equipped with core competencies in the main area of ICT.

This is a beginners level course and does not have prerequisites. It is practice based and learners will be equipped with relevant computer skills that will be relevant in further education, day to day use and also form a foundation for those intending to undertake ICT as a career.

What Will You Learn?

  • This module introduces learners to information and communication technology (ICT).
  • It creates a foundation for fundamentals for computer hardware, operating systems and application software.
  • It discusses computer input and output devices, data processing and data storage.
  • What computer software is and a general overview of ICT is discussed.

Course Content

MODULE 1: Introduction to Computer Architecture
Definition of a computer system, History of Computers, Basic components of a computer system. Differentiate between Data and Information, Describe the various applications of computer technology.

MODULE 2: Computer Networks and Telecommunications
In this module, I will give you a brief note on computer networking in the easiest way. Here, I will cover what is a computer network, types of computer network, components, properties, Uses and disadvantages of computer networking. Types of computer Networks and the components. Client/server and thin client Networks. Directly connected terminals, Network Topologies, OSI Model. Benefits of a computer network.

MODULE 3: Computer Software -Working with Windows
What is a software? Types of computer software (application and system software). Components and functions of System Software

MODULE 4: Wordprocessor – MS Word
This is a full and free computer course for Microsoft Word 2007 and up to the latest versions. It is designed for complete beginners. If you're not sure whether or not you're in the right place take a look at Session 1 below, How to Open Microsoft Word.

MODULE 5: Spreadsheet – MS Excel
In this section of the course, you're going to learn what spreadsheets are, and what they can do. You'll get a first glimpse of the Microsoft Excel software, and how it works. You'll also learn about cell coordinates, rows and columns, and how to enter data into a cell. So, let's make a start.

MODULE 6: Databases – MS Access
Welcome to this course on Microsoft Access. It's only a short course, at the moment. I hope to add more lessons later. But for now, you'll learn all the essentials: Creating tables, adding data, linking tables, creating forms, constructing queries, and producing reports.
